At the southern end of Riverhead Forest West Coast Riders Club (WCRC) have built a trail network. This is accessed off Old North Road north of Kumeu.

There are approximately 20 trails in this forest network, mainly of a trail/downhill or cross-country style. A couple of the trails are advised only for expert riders. If you enter the forest from Old North Road, there is a sign-post/map (which has unfortuately been used as target practice by some fool) showing the trails.

Riding here is pretty simple, bike straight up the road in front of you, it's reasonably steep in a couple of parts, but it isn't a long climb, around 10 minutes and you are at the top where all the trails head back down. Several trails lead straight back down to where you began including Smoker. To access Trig and Hand Job, continue a little further. Once down Trig, you can then either continue down XC Loop, or head along the forest road to your left to access further trails. Most of these trails also lead back to where you began, with a couple including Dodgy's leading to a different forest entry point, but you can head back up the forest road to pick up a link back to where you began. Once back where you began, it's back up the forest road again for another exhilarating ride back down.

The trails are free and maintained by the WCRC crew, many thanks to the crew from all of us. Some of the trails can be quite rutty, especially the more XC style, but this is a great way to perfect those rut-riding skills.

There are no on-site facilities, and no one is going to come and rescue you if you crash out late in the day, so stay within your limits, and please respect the trails.
