The Kaiteriteri Mountain Bike Park is a brilliant free to use bike park close to the beautiful Kaiteriteri beach and arose out of a collaboration between the Department of Conservation, the Kaiteriteri Recreation Reserve Board (KRRB) and local mountain bikers to create a recreational off-road biking venue on public conservation land.

In 2009, the 180ha area of conservation land was gazetted as Kaiteriteri Recreational Reserve under the management of the KRRB. It is being developed as a bike park in partnership with Kaiteriteri Mountain Bike Park Inc. (KMTBP), a body of enthusiastic volunteers committed to providing a wide range of trails to suit all users.
It is free and open access to cyclists, who ride the trails at their own risk. Walkers and runners are welcome but must give way to cyclists and observe all track restrictions.

The track network is being created in a staged process. The first stage, completed in 2009, created a series of linked, easy-grade tracks that connect the MTB Park base at the Trailer Park with an exit beside Bethany Park. As they were built using a mini-excavator, they are all wide, smooth and gently undulating.

The second stage focussed on providing a range of intermediate-grade riding. A mixture of digger and hand-benched tracks, they offer more challenging gradients and include some narrow 'single-track'. By 2012, several kms of 'moderate' level track was in use, some of it One-Way.

In 2013, an upgrade of Easy Rider to Grade 2 standard was carried out to enable it to become part of the Tasman Great Taste Trail cycleway.

The latest brilliant addition, and one of the best trails in New Zealand is Jaws, the first stage a 1km traverse of the upper slopes was opened in March 2014, followed by a wicked downhill section that feels like a roller-coaster at times, with huge ramps and drops. Volunteers also completed the hand-benched, singletrack, Skullduggery, into the southern boundary of the Park in November 2104.

Working bees are help every Sunday morning from April to November. Contact us at info@kaiteriterimtbpark.org.nz to be included on the email-out or friend then on Facebook to be alerted to notifications.

The Skills Zone, located at the Trailer Park, has a Pump Track and wooden elements to improve rider confidence.

Maintenance work is regularly carried out at the Park to ensure all trails are open and in good condition year-round. Work is also undertaken on some pre-existing firebreaks to extend the riding options for advanced and expert riders.

All up, this is an amazing place to enjoy some superb quality trails for all abilities, and then take a cooling dip in the sea or swim out to the pontoon at the end of your ride.
